Launched by award-winning journalist Jerry Ballard in January 1961, Heartbeat magazine became the voice for Free Will Baptist missionary work around the world until merging with other denominational publications into ONE Magazine, which began publishing in April 2005.
Four editors guided the periodical through its 44-year history: Jerry Ballard, Bill Jones, Don Robirds, and Deborah St. Lawrence. During its run, the magazine was recognized nationally as one of the top missions periodicals.
Current IM Director Clint Morgan observes,
“Heartbeat served as the informational link between the missionaries and the constituency. This developed more focused prayer for the ministries as well as assurance that their financial contributions are being properly used.”
